To Our Listeners:

Our spring concert will begin with works by Thomas Weelkes, one of the greatest of the English madrigalists, and continue with works by Romantic master Robert Schumann. Schumann’s name is usually associated with his piano, chamber, and orchestral music, but he composed a significant amount of choral music and we will present five of these rarely-heard pieces to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Schumann’s birth.

The 20th Century German composer Paul Hindemith will be represented by his Six Chansons from 1939. These pieces, written soon after Hindemith’s exile to the United States, are wonderfully evocative settings of French poetry by Rainer Maria Rilke. The program will conclude with more music from the 1930s in the form of choral arrangements of classic standards from the stage and screen by George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, and Richard Rodgers.

As always, readings of prose and poetry will accompany and complement the music. Please join us!
